This is one of the largest African countries. With a surface of 2,345,000 km2 on either side of the equator (5° 2' latitude north and 13° 15' latitude south), it covers most of the heart of Africa. It stretches out to neighbour with equatorial and sub-Saharan countries. Congo has a major trading access on the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
The Democratic Republic of Congo was a Belgian colony until the sixties (Belgian Congo). After a decade of de-colonisation, the country changed name to Zaire.
It took its current name in 1997.
The country is one of the richest in natural resources in the world for its forests and mines. The Congolese rain forests are the largest and least exploited in the world. A wide variety of timber species grow there, including some of the most important for making parquet flooring.
To date, log exportation from Congo is one of the lowest in sub-equatorial African countries, increasing the exporting potential of this country for the future.
